Why
are there charges for Orientation programs?
Unlike many schools that support New Student Orientation with tuition and fees,
the Office of Student Orientation and Transition at the University of Maryland receives no state and no institutional funding.
At the university, New Student Orientation is referred to as a "fee for
service" department. All of the programs and services are funded solely through orientation charges.
A subtle benefit of the "fee-for-service" structure at UMD is greater accountability.
You get a more itemized bill that tells you more specifically where your dollar is being spent.
If you have further questions about Orientation charges, don't hesitate to contact our office so we can provide you with the answers.
